Agra

Visit the home of the Taj Mahal, Agra
Once a bastion of the Mughal Empire, Agra today is a rich cultural center with its various tombs, forts, the nearby Fatehpur Sikri, and many other places of interest.
Today, Agra hosts three UNESCO-approved heritage tourist attractions and is a standing testimony to the might of the Mughal empire as well as the proof of their grandeur and appreciation of architecture.

Getting here
Agra is an extremely popular tourist destination and so travel options are plenty. Agra contains the Kheria Air Force base that also serves as a commercial airport, but flight services are limited to Air India at the moment. We recommend foreign travelers to catch a plane to Bangalore or Delhi first and then to Agra. If that proves to be too expensive, you can also take a bus or train.
The city is well-connected by train, being a main stop on most routes from the North to the South of India. Most private buses from various operators also cater to Agra. You may also want to consider the ISBT services to and from the city’s Idgah Bus Stand.

Getting around
As with most tourist destinations, Agra is well linked in terms of intercity transport. You have the options of:
Autorickshaw: What most people might know as a tuk-tuk. These are plentily available especially around the tourist destinations and can be shared with other travelers to get a cheaper price. Electric rickshaws also ferry to and from the Taj Mahal since polluting vehicles are not allowed in the premises.
Tonga/camel cart: This is more of a joyride option than a method of transport but some people do use it to get around the city.
Bus: The Agra Municipal corporation hosts a bus service that has routes all around the city. For tourists who want no hassle, UP Tourism has the option of a full-day tour in an AC bus that covers all major tourist attractions in Agra.

What to see
The Taj Mahal is undoubtedly the reason most tourists will visit Agra in the first place! This tomb was built as a testament of love to the wife of emperor Shah Jahan. Made out of pure white marble, today the Taj is one of the 7 Wonders of the World as declared in 2007. In it lies the tomb of the Emperor himself, next to his beloved wife.
Even though a less visited place of interest, Agra Fort offers a lovely view of the city and should definitely be in one's travel itinerary. Early mornings are the best time to visit here for the quiet. The Agra fort is also a UNESCO world heritage site that is just 2.5km from the Taj Mahal.
Next, we have the Fatehpur Sikri, which is a small city itself in Agra district and was the capital of the Mughal Empire. Built by Akbar to honor the Sheikh Salim Chishti, this small city contains some of the best examples of Mughal architecture in the forms of the Buland Darwara, the Jama Masjid and many other intricate buildings.
The tomb of Emperor Akbar at Sikandra and Jama Mosque in Fatehpur Sikri are another two tourist sites which should also be visited in Agra.

Where to stay
Agra has a wide range of both budget friendly and luxury hotels. Ideally we would suggest you find a room near the ISBT bus stand at the Idgah colony for its robust connectivity to other parts of the city. For a more quaint, homely stay, there are numerous hotels on the outskirts of the city and around. To find out the best hotel for your budget, check out the listings at Homeaway!

What to eat
Agra has a diverse culture with Mughalai and Lodi influences, and it shows in the food. Travelers shouldn’t miss the chance to try out some of the city’s most famous street food which is also quite popular across the country. Agra ka petha, undoubtedly the most famous item from Agra, is made from the ash gourd vegetable and sold everywhere in the city. Dalmoth should also be tried, which is a savory snack made with *sev* (thin fritters) and lentils and other nuts. Biryani is a delectable rice dish made with chicken or mutton is second to none, and should be tried in Agra too.
